Our History

German Mutual Insurance Association took root in 1888 in the heart of Iowa's agricultural community. Born from the need for reliable insurance protection for farms and families, the company was founded by six forward-thinking German settlers who envisioned a future where their fellow community members could safeguard their hard-earned assets. These pioneers, August Toenjes, Ben Heeren, John H. Tobiason, Harm Harms, Gerd Rickels, and George H. Balster, gathered in Wayne Township, Jones County, driven by the desire to build a collective safety net.

From its humble beginnings, German Mutual Insurance Company - as it was initially known - focused on fire and lightning protection for buildings and personal property. The company's dedication to service and responsible growth was evident in the reorganization of 1916, which saw the name change to German Mutual Fire Insurance Association. This shift reflected the company's commitment to expanding its offerings and meeting the evolving needs of its policyholders.

Over the decades, German Mutual consistently broadened its coverage to encompass a wider range of potential perils, including wind damage, theft, vandalism, and collision. This dedication to staying ahead of the curve and providing comprehensive protection solidified the company's reputation for reliability and customer-focused solutions. In 1954, the company adopted its present name, German Mutual Insurance Association, a testament to its enduring legacy and unwavering commitment to serving the agricultural community.
