Established in 1888, Bragaw & Co. was founded on a philosophy of offering personal, professional service. Since then, we have grown into a full-service agency with a staff of 8 insurance specialists serving Beaufort County and Surrounding Areas. Our founder, William Bragaw, born in Washington, NC, April 28, 1866, and died May 24, 1953, started the business and at the time of his death was the oldest licensed insurance agent in the state of North Carolina, both in age and time of service. In a 1905 Washington Chamber of Commerce booklet, these words appeared: "If you are coming this way to live, and happen to be an investor who will build a factory, or store, or mill, or home, you'll wish the property protected against loss. With a big list of the best companies writing insurance and with practical knowledge of insurance forms and laws, gained by twenty odd years of experience, we welcome you into our midst with a sincere desire to be of service to you, and knowing that service to be the best that can be offered. Real Estate, that is another thing we can talk about."

Those in the firm in 1905 were William Bragaw, H. Churchill Bragaw, John G. Bragaw, Jr., and Richard Bragaw. John G. Bragaw, Jr. joined the firm in 1902 at the request of his brother, William. John Bragaw agreed to leave the Cape Fear & Yadkin Valley Railway, where he had been employed as an agent for seven years, to become the second generation of the Bragaw family to join the business. He served the company faithfully for over 40 years, eventually becoming the president of the company.
