History of Marine Cargo Insurance

The concept of marine cargo insurance dates back to ancient times, with historical records tracing its roots to 3000 BC. The earliest recorded form of marine cargo insurance is believed to have originated in ancient Babylon, where merchants practiced a form of loss control by spreading a given cargo among several vessels. This practice continued throughout the Mediterranean region and was further emphasized in an edict by the Roman Emperor Justinian. The concept of General Average, another key concept in marine insurance, was also used by ancient civilizations, including the Greek and Phoenician traders.

Development of Marine Insurance

The rise of guilds in Europe during the 11th and 12th centuries marked a significant milestone in the development of marine insurance. Danish navigators formed guilds to indemnify members against losses at sea, while written records began to emerge in the cities of Lombardy, Venice, and Florence. The Merchant State of Venice, for instance, embodied the principles of mutual insurance against the loss of pillage through contribution.

Lloyd's of London

The Lloyd's of London Association, founded in 1688, has been instrumental in shaping the marine insurance industry. The organization's roots can be traced to a coffee shop where underwriters and merchants would meet to transact insurance business.
