As we celebrate our 140th year of service to the insuring public, the New York Insurance Association (NYIA) is proud to look back on our rich history of advocating for the property and casualty insurance industry in New York State. Our organization was founded in 1882, with the simple goal of providing sound insurance protection and advocating for the interests of our member companies.
History
Our journey began with the Bracket House meeting in Rochester, where the New York Central Organization of Co-Operative Fire Insurance was organized. Over the years, we evolved to become the current NYIA, having undergone several name changes and mergers. In 1965, we dropped the word "casualty" from our name, and in 1988, we incorporated as the New York Insurance Alliance Inc. In 1997, we unified with the New York State Insurance Association to become the New York Insurance Association Inc. (NYIA) that we know today.
Our legacy is built on the values of unity and cooperation among insurance companies, mutuals, and cooperatives. As the industry evolved, we recognized that our shared goals and challenges outweighed our differences, and we have been representing the interests of our members for over 20 years.
