Our History and Mission

Centre County Mutual Fire Insurance Company was founded in 1877 by a group of individuals who were all members of the Centre County Pomona Grange. The company's founders were Isaac S. Frain, John H Barnhart, and George Taylor, among others. The Grange, an organization promoting farming and farm life, had formed a local chapter in 1873 under the leadership of Centre Hall area farmer Leonard Rhone. The company's charter was issued in February 2, 1877, and it was approved by Pennsylvania Governor John Hartranft and President Rutherford B. Hayes. Centre County Mutual started as a mutual effort among rural farmers and businesses in Centre County, providing fire insurance to homes, farms, and businesses. Over time, the company expanded its writings outside of Centre County and now provides property insurance throughout Pennsylvania. Our mission remains to protect the future of our policyholders with our promise of quality service and support.
